URUMQI - Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region saw retail sales top 3.9 billion yuan ($618.5 million) during the Spring Festival holiday, up by more than 18 percent from the same period last year, local authorities said Monday.

Officials from the Xinjiang regional government's commerce bureau said the week-long holiday, which lasted from January 22 to 28, greatly boosted the consumer goods market.

Clothes, cosmetics, jewelry and household appliances predictably topped local residents' shopping lists for the Lunar New Year, and imported foods and beverages, private cars and traveling have become residents' new consumption interests.

Prior to the holiday, the region's business trading companies and local governments took various measures to ensure sufficient supplies of consumer goods and stabilize prices.
