BEIJING - Chinese President Hu Jintao discussed the European Union's new debt crisis relief plan in a phone hook-up with his French counterpart, Nicolas Sarkozy, Thursday.

During their talk, Sarkozy briefed Hu on the just-concluded EU summit and the EU's package of measures to battle the region's debt crisis and said the European Union was committed to proceeding in a positive direction.

Hu said the bailout deal reached at the EU summit demonstrated Europe's will to unite to seek a solution to the debt problem.

The Chinese president voiced hope the series of measures would help Europe stabilize its financial markets, overcome current difficulties and promote economic recovery and growth.

The two leaders also exchanged views on the upcoming G20 summit in Cannes, France.

Hu said the G20 had become an important platform for global economic management.

China hopes the G20 would, by means of the Cannes summit, convey an unmistakable signal of growth and stability to the international community and make continued efforts to encourage robust, sustainable and balanced growth for the world economy, he said.

Sarkozy said he hoped the parties to the summit would adopt common measures to ensure world economic growth.
