TAIYUAN - The majority of the 141 primary school students who fell ill after eating at a school in North China's Shanxi province have been discharged from local hospitals, local authorities said Tuesday.
One hundred and five pupils have recovered after receiving treatment, while another 36 children remain hospitalized, said an official who is investigating the case.
The official added that none of the hospitalized children are in serious condition.
The students experienced stomachaches and nausea after eating at the Xinxiao Bilingual Experimental School in the province's capital of Taiyuan on Monday. Initial tests showed the cause to be a food-borne gastrointestinal infection.
Local health authorities have promised to launch a thorough inspection of all of the school canteens in the Xinghualing District, where the school is located.
