Canadian Governor to welcome Hu, says to visit China

OTTAWA - Together with her family, Canadian Governor-General Michaëlle Jean will welcome visiting Chinese Hu Jintao on June 24.

"It is with great honor that my husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, our daughter Marie-éden, and I will welcome His Excellency Hu Jintao, as this year marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Canada," said the Governor General in a press release.

The Governor General also mentioned that "shortly after the President of China's State visit, my family and I will be making a visit to China. This will give me an opportunity to continue the discussion with President Hu that I began here, and to strengthen the important, historical ties that unite our two countries.

The President is accompanied by one of the highest-level delegation ever to come to Canada. He arrived in Ottawa late this afternoon to kick off his three-day state visit to Canada, which will be the first paid by the Chinese president since Canadian Prime Minister Harper and his Conservative party took power in 2006.

The State visit, celebrating the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and China, will highlight the ties between the countries.

In a written Statement delivered upon arrival, Hu said that China always values China-Canada relations.

"Under the current international situation, China and Canada share broad common interests and vast potential for cooperation in many areas, ranging from developing individual economies and promoting world economic growth to helping resolve regional hotspot issues and jointly meetingvarious global challenges," said Hu.

"During this visit, I look forward to extensive meetings and in-depth discussions with Canadian leaders and friends from all sectors of Canadian society to explore with them effective ways to advance our strategic cooperation.”

According to Hu, China stands ready to work with Canada and use the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties as an opportunitiy to further expand exchanges and cooperation in various fields, push forward the China-Canada strategic partnership and bring even more benefits to people of the two countries and around the world.
