The first inter-provincial subway project in China, which will connect Shanghai and Kunshan, Jiangsu province, has been approved by the National Development and Reform Commission.

The 6-kilometer extension part of Shanghai Metro Line 11 stretches from Anting in Shanghai to Huaqiao in Kunshan.

The project, with a total investment of 1.7 billion yuan, is estimated to be completed and start operation by the end of 2012.

To boost intercity transportation in the Yangtze River Delta, the subway line may also connect with the Suzhou subway network, which is in the planning stages.
