The new 777-300ER jets are to become the backbone of Air China's long-haul international fleet, said Fan Cheng, vice president of the airline.

"The airplane's high efficiency and performance features will enable Air China to launch more direct long-haul routes to meet the increasing demand of our passengers," said Fan.

Marlin Dailey, vice president of Sales and Marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said in a company statement that the order for the 777s also "underscores Air China's confidence in the world's most successful twin-engine, long-haul airplane".

The twin-engine Boeing 777-300ER is able to carry 365 passengers and fly a distance of up to 14,685 kilometers without refueling, according to Boeing.
