Tourists to Tibet up 28 pct in first quarter

LHASA - Tibet hosted 279,886 tourists in the first four months of 2010, up 28 percent year on year, after the southwest China region held a series of tourism promotion activities.

The figure includes 19,539 foreign tourists, up 37.5 percent, and 260,347 domestic tourists, up 27.3 percent, the regional tourism bureau said in a statement Wednesday.

The tourism revenue jumped 33.7 percent year on year to 280.5 million yuan ($41.1 million).

Tibet plans to attract 6.5 million tourists and earn tourism revenue of 6.7 billion yuan this year.

Last year, it hosted 5.61 million tourists and earned tourism revenue of 5.6 billion yuan ($891.6 million).

Summer is the peak travel season for the plateau region.
