Ye Shuyang, former chief of the Public Security Bureau of Shaoguan City, appeared in the Intermediate People's Court of Heyuan City, charged with taking bribes worth more than $2.5 million.

Ye pleaded for leniency in sentencing.

Ye accepted the bribes from 1988 to 2008, when he served in a variety of Communist Party of China and administrative posts in public security authorities in Guangdong, provincial prosecutors told the court.

In return, he had abused his authority by offering illicit benefits to business operators, interfering in judical investigations, sheltering a drug dealer, and assisting bribe-givers avoid investigations and achieve other advantages, said prosecutors.

In addition, Ye, 54, could not explain the sources of more than 16 million yuan ($2.34 million) of assets.

The case continues.
