One female and eight male bodies were found in the building in Wenzhou city, said a fireman surnamed Wu.

The two injured were taken to hospital where their conditions were stable, he said.

"The fire started at 12:50 am, and was out at 2 am," Wu said.

Ten fire trucks and more than 50 fire-fighters attended the blaze, said Wu.

Apartments in the four-storey building were for rent and were mainly inhabited by migrant workers.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
