The earthquake is a great challenge for young people born after the 1980s, offering them a chance to display their patriotism, said Dr Li Houqiang from the policy research office of the Sichuan Provincial Party Committee.

Prior to May 12, the post-80s generation was often considered selfish, cold and rebellious. Many young people also disliked their seniors, believing they were stubborn and rigid.

However, many media at home and abroad have found young people to be the protagonists of moving earthquake relief effort stories.

"Through their actions, these young people have gained a deeper understanding of the country, their home and the people. This is a significant improvement in their thoughts, humanity and perception.

"We must not only change our old ideas about the post-80s generation, but also salute them," Li said.
