China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), the country's largest oil producer, has agreed to invest in a joint venture oil refinery plant near the capital of Chad, in central Africa, Xinhua News Agency reported.

A subsidiary of CNPC, the CNPC Service and Engineering Ltd, has signed an agreement with the central African country's government to jointly invest in a refinery company to the north of the capital N'Djamena, Xinhua said, quoting a company announcement.

The CNPC subsidiary will take charge of the construction and will be responsible for the design, manufacturing standards and equipment needed for the joint venture.

Chad has 13 oilfields but imports all its refined oil products. Chad, which has a population of about 9.8 million, is an increasingly important oil producer and exporter.
