Officer held for torturing innocent real estate staff

Li Wei, a policeman in Lanzhou, capital of Northwest China's Gansu Province, was arrested on Monday for extracting confessions by torture in a civil dispute case.

Li Tianrong and Zheng Jun, a manager and a clerk at a local real estate development firm, were arrested in September 1999 for a real estate deal that had mistakenly been identified as a case of criminal fraud. During the investigation, Li Wei tortured to Li Tianrong and Zheng Jun to confess.

On July 6, 2006, Li Tianrong and Zheng Jun applied for compensation for wrongful arrest, and the local people's procuratorate decided to pay Li Tianrong 55,488 yuan ($7,114) and Zheng Jun 6,319 yuan ($810), according to their losses.
