Dec 16, 1945: Zhou Enlai leads CPC delegation to Chongqing to attend political consultative conference

CPC Encyclopedia | Updated: 2011-12-17 10:24

On December 16, 1945, Zhou Enlai led the delegation of the Communist Party of China to Chongqing to attend the political consultative conference. On December 27, they submitted a written proposal to the Kuomintang government to request an unconditional truce. Because the Kuomintang government had not completed preparations for an all-out civil war and the Soviet Union, the United States and the United Kingdom showed their attitude towards the China problem, the Kuomintang government were forced to agree to negotiate for a truce. On January 5, 1946, the representatives of the two sides reached an agreement to stop domestic military conflicts. On January 10, the two sides signed a formal truce deal.
