Jan 14, 1949: Chairman Mao Zedong on behalf of the CPC issues a statement on the current situation

On Jan 14, 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong on behalf of the CPC issued a statement on the current situation, criticizing Chiang Kai-shek's New Year statement for compromise, and proposed eight conditions to achieve real peace. These conditions were: (a) punishing war criminals; (b) repealing the pseudo-Constitution; (c) repealing the pseudo-legal system; (d) adapting all reactionary forces based on democratic principles; (e) Confiscating bureaucratic capital; (f) reforming the land system; (g) repealing the traitorous treaties; (h) holding the Political Consultative Conference without reactionaries, establishing the democratic coalition government, and receiving all the powers from every levels of government of the KMT government in Nanjing. These eight conditions reflected the wishes of the Chinese people, obtaining the enthusiastic support of the national people and all democratic parties.

Jan 14—15, 1949: The Northeast Field Army launches a general offensive on the defensive enemy in Tianjin who refuses to surrender

From Jan 14 to Jan 15, 1949, the Northeast Field Army launched a general offensive on the defensive enemy in Tianjin, who refused to surrender, combining all armies of infantry, artillery, engineers, armored joint operations to liberate Tianjin through 29 hours' fighting with wiping out 130,000 enemies. On Jan 16, defensive enemies in Tanggu escaped from the sea.

Jan 14—20, 1956: The CPC Central Committee holds a conference on intellectuals in Beijing

Zhou Enlai, on behalf of the CPC Central Committee, made a "report on intellectuals," pointing out that in order to achieve socialist industrialization, we "must rely on close cooperation between manual and mental work and rely on the brothers' alliance of workers, peasants, and intellectuals." The report noted for the first time that intellectuals have become important factors in all aspects of our nation; the most among them has been a part of the working class. It is important for completing the general task to properly solve the intellectual problem and more fully mobilize and develop their strength. The report analyzed the situation of the world's scientific and technological development, affirming that science and technology are decisive factors related to national defense, the economy and culture, proposing to people across the country the task of "marching to modern science." Mao Zedong made a speech on the last day at the meeting to call the whole Party to learn scientific knowledge, together with intellectuals outside the Party, struggling for a quick catch up with the world advanced level of science. After the meeting, the country began the new atmosphere of marching to the science.

Jan 14—18, 1961: The Ninth Plenary Session of the Eighth Central Committee of CPC is held in Beijing

The meeting heard and discussed the "report on the implementation of the national economic plan in 1960 and 1961 the main indicators of national economic planning" made by Li Fuchun, emphasizing the implementation of national economics based on agricultural policy, the National Party and citizens making a great effort in agriculture and food, appropriately shortening the front of the infrastructure development and reducing the speed of heavy industry. The meeting formally approved the principal of "adjustment, consolidation, enrichment and improvement" for the implementation of the national economy, and decided to carry out the rectification in the whole rural community. The meeting also approved the decision of the Central Political Bureau to establish 6 Central Boards in September throughout the 1960s. At the meeting, Mao Zedong called on the Party to do the investigation and study. This meeting marked the major changes of Party's guiding ideology, and stated that the "Great Leap Forward" policy has virtually ceased and the national economy has gone into the orbit of adjustment.
