SHANGHAI - The annual container traffic of Shanghai port has reached 30 million TEUs on Friday, which is a world record high, according to the China Communications Ministry.

Shanghai port, which started container traffic in 1978, has witnessed fast development of container traffic, with the container traffic volume reaching 10 million TEUs in 2003 and 20 million in 2006.

The port became the world's busiest port in 2010, with the largest goods volume handling capacity and container traffic volume.

Experts point out that fast development of the container traffic in Shanghai port underscores the impact of China's sustained economic growth on global trade patterns, as well as the port's own efforts to upgrade its traffic system and port environment to gain a better competition edge.

Statistics from the ministry show that during the Jan-Nov period the country's above-designated-size ports had handled 8.32 billion tons of goods, an increase of 13 percent to that of the last year, and the container traffic was 149.1 million TEUs, an increase of 12 percent.
