HK's total receipts from trade, services down 6.2% in 2009

HONG KONG - Hong Kong's Census and Statistics Department announced Thursday that the total receipts (comprising sales and other receipts) of the import and export, wholesale and retail trades, accommodation and food services sectors amounted to HK$3,505.4 billion in 2009, down 6.2 percent year-on-year.

According to a release by the department, operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees of the sectors altogether amounted to HK$3,271.3 billion in 2009, representing a decrease of 5.3 percent compared with 2008.

Meanwhile, gross surplus of the sectors decreased 17.2 percent to HK$234 billion in 2009, and the value added of the sectors, which is a measure of their contribution to Hong Kong's gross domestic product, decreased by 7.9 percent to HK$427.4 billion.

According to the same release, it was estimated that the afore-mentioned sectors comprised some 162,100 establishments and engaged about 1,034,700 persons, or an average of 6.4 persons per establishment, in 2009.
