HK's port cargo throughput up 5% in Q3

HONG KONG - Hong Kong's total port cargo throughput rose to 67.8 million tons in the third quarter, up 5 percent over a year earlier, the city's Census and Statistics Department announced Tuesday.

According to the statistics, inward and outward port cargo rose 8 percent and 2 percent to 39.1 million tons and 28.7 million tons respectively.

For the first nine months of the year, total port cargo throughput grew 11 percent over a year earlier to 197.8 million tons. Inward port cargo surged 12 percent to 114.4 million tons and outward port cargo increased 10 percent to 83.4 million tons.

Within port cargo, seaborne cargo increased 8 percent over a year earlier to 46.6 million tons, while river cargo recorded virtually no change at 21.2 million tons in the third quarter.
