S Korea, IMF to hold Asia conference in July

SEOUL: South Korea will jointly host an economic conference with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in July to discuss Asia's economic growth and the region's future role in the international community, the government said Tuesday.

According to the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, South Korea will host the conference titled "Asia 21: Leading the Way Forward" in the southern city of Daejeon, from July 12 to July 13, in cooperation with the IMF, where more than 300 central bank governors and high-ranking officials from each government, academia, and civic groups will participate.

The main purpose of the conference is to evaluate Asia's economic development so far and discuss the region's future role in the rapidly evolving global economy, as well as financial issues in terms of "regional financial integration," the ministry added.

South Korea was named the host of the event as it will chair the G20 summit this year and has been playing a leading role in recovering from the global economic downturn, the ministry said.

In September last year, South Korea was selected as the host country of the fifth G20 summit for the 20 advanced and emerging economies to help address global economic issues.
