China Telecom wins 1M mobile users in January

China Telecom, a major telephone service operator, said on Friday it won 1.02 million new mobile phone subscribers in January, the first time it has reported positive growth since it bought wireless operations from a rival last year.

But the company lost 970,000 fixed-line customers last month, reducing the total to 207.4 million, as more people switched to mobiles.

China Telecom, which bought China Unicom's CDMA cellular operations last year as part of a broader industry restructuring, had 28.9 million mobile subscribers by the end of January, the company said on its website.

China Telecom, which was awarded a license from the government to run CDMA services last month, aims to add 35 million CDMA subscribers this year and have a total of at least 100 million mobile phone users in 2010, said China Telecom President Shang Bing.
