Toyota Motor Corp president Katsuaki Watanabe said Thursday the automaker wants to build new plants in China and India to meet fast-growing demand in the emerging economies.

"Enhancing production capability in emerging economies is an urgent task for us," Watanabe said in an interview.

He said Toyota's production capability is falling behind market demand in China, and suggested the new plant there is likely to be built in an area near Changchun, Northeast China's Jiliin Province, where Toyota is producing the Prius hybrid.
