The internal-combustion engine industry will witness an average annual increase of around 10 percent in total output and output value during the 11th Five-Year Program period (2006-2010), the industrial research department of the Machinery Industry Information Center predicted.

Output of single-cylinder diesel engines, multi-cylinder diesel engines (including alternative fuel engines) and multi-cylinder gasoline engines (including alternative fuel engines and hybrid power) will reach 6-7 million, 4.2 million and 5.79 million units by 2010 respectively, according to the center's predictions.

Key research, development and production for engine manufacturers will be focused on: new-generation single-cylinder diesel engines; small new-generation general gasoline engines; diesel engines for trucks, buses and passenger cars meeting the Euro III and IV emission standards and energy-saving requirements; new-generation gasoline engines for passenger cars (including sport utility vehicles and multi-purpose vehicles) meeting the Euro III and IV emission standards and energy-saving requirements; various alternative fuel (including compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, alcohol and ether) engines for passenger cars and large and medium buses; and hybrid engines for passenger cars and large and medium buses.

In terms of engine parts and components, industrial focus will be on: electronically controlled inline fuel injection pumps; electronically controlled high-pressure common rail fuel injection systems; electronically controlled high-pressure unit pumps and various new injectors and nozzles; accessories and components for various kinds of new internal-combustion engines meeting the Euro III and IV emission standards and energy-saving requirements; new-generation high-power and low- and mid-speed diesel engines for large ships; and exhaust gas aftertreatment systems for engines.

The internal-combustion engine industry will also see sustained development in terms of technology during the 11th Five-Year Program period. The development of many technologies will be highlighted, including high-pressure injection technology for vehicle diesel engines, technology of direct injection inside cylinders for gasoline engines and technology of exhaust gas aftertreatment for vehicle internal-combustion engines, according to the center.

During the 2006-2010 period, China should encourage and promote internal-combustion engine enterprises to form various kinds of corporate groups or strategic alliances with main matching enterprises to coordinate development and achieve a win-win outcome, according to the center. Reorganization of giant enterprises inside the industry should also be encouraged to make the enterprises stronger and larger.

The internal-combustion engine-matching accessories are the base for the development of the internal-combustion engine industry. Therefore a batch of modern internal-combustion engine-matching accessories manufacturers with high level and high technical content should be fostered and developed to offer matching services for modern internal-combustion engines.

In addition, new technologies, new techniques and new materials should also be heavily promoted throughout the industry to strengthen technical renovation and improve industrial processing technical levels.
