Toshiba said last week that Takaaki Tanaka had been appointed as chief representative of Toshiba in China and chairman and president of Toshiba China Co Ltd, effective from this month, to succeed Nobumasa Hirata, who had been in the posts since 2001.

Tanaka, a graduate from Thunderbird, the Garvin School of International Management in Arizona, has been working at Toshiba since 1975 and was vice-president of Toshiba US and head of Toshiba's overseas business.

Hirata will return to Toshiba's headquarters in Tokyo and act as consultant to Toshiba China.
