Chery promotes three new models in 2007By Su Yue (Chinadaily.com.cn)Updated: 2007-02-08 14:37 Chery Automobile Co Ltd plans to launch three new models including the A1, V2 and Karry in the first quarter of this year, which debuted at the Beijing International Auto Expo last November.
The A1 model is another economy car after the QQ model. The targeted consumer group is young people who pursue fashion and individuality. The A1 model is fitted with a 1.3 Liter engine independently developed by Chery, and a five-speed manual transmission. Despite the compact size, the model boasts quite a number of advanced technical features. It adopts the MacPherson front suspension and dual circuit break system, anti-lock brake system (ABS) and electric break distribution (EBD), dual air bags, three-point safety belts, DVD player, global positioning system (GPS), electronic rear-view mirror, backing radar, and electronic door locks.
Chery Automobile disclosed that the A1 model aims at the high-end hatchback market, and the overall level is above the QQ model. Currently, the domestic high-end hatchback market is mainly dominated by joint venture brands such as Benben, Aveo, Swift, and Dongfeng Peugeot 206. Meanwhile, Chery Automobile also aims to explore the global market for A1, and the model is expected to become one of flagship export models for the company.
Chery V2 is the second multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) model developed on the company's V series product platform. The model is China's first mini MPV with front drive and front engine, and it combines certain functions of a mini van. The model adopts a sedan chassis design, sedan interior decoration and MPV style seats. As a result, the Chery V2 enjoys a sedan's features such as comfort and low noise as well as an MPV's broad view and large interior space. Meanwhile, the front engine front drive technology effectively avoids the defects of the mini van which is prone to side slipping due to the central engine and rear drive technology adopted. Chery believes that the V2 model's potential competitors include both mini vans and MPV producers.
The third model Chery will launch this year is the Karry, an urban multiple function logistics vehicle. The model meets Euro III emissions standards, and offers both comfort like a sedan and excellent carrying capacity. This is Chery¡¯s first model targeted for the commercial vehicle market. Like Chery V2, the Karry model also opens a new segment market which overlaps with both the traditional mini van and light bus. Cherry Automobile views the Volkswagen Caddy as major competitor.
