This is the first time that China replaced the United States to lead the index, the report said. China had shared the lead with the US in the first quarter.

Ernst & Young expected China would retain a dominant position, said Ben Warren, the company's environment and energy infrastructure advisory leader.

China also topped the company's attractiveness index for investments in wind power, according to the report.

The Ernst & Young ranking comprised 27 countries, with Germany, India, Italy, the UK, France, Spain, Canada and Portugal completing the top 10 behind China and the US, said Bloomberg.
