Disarmament is priority for Russia at UN General Assembly: envoy(Xinhua)
Updated: 2009-09-18 16:42 Disarmament was one of the priorities for the Russian delegation to the 64th UN General Assembly, the Russian permanent envoy to the United Nations said Thursday. "We will also promote Russian draft resolutions on information security and confidence-building measures in space at the General Assembly," Vitaly Churkin said in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper. The main task of the Russian delegation was "to contribute to multilateral cooperation," the Itar-Tass news agency quoted him as saying.
"Discussions are continuing on increasing the effectiveness of UN activity. Russia will take an active role in these discussions," he said. The UN General Assembly on Tuesday opened its 64th session at the UN Headquarters in New York. More than 140 heads of state or government have confirmed their participation at the UN summits, which will focus on global challenges such as climate change, nuclear security and non-proliferation as well as the world financial and economic crisis. |
