China is a strategic market for suppliers of 3G mobile networks as the economic downturn has screwed a tight lid on operators' investment budgets.

Alcatel-Lucent will equip Unicom with mobile networks that support services such as media streaming, video sharing and high-speed Internet access. Financial details were not divulged.

Ericsson said earlier this month it had also been retained to build 3G infrastructure for China Unicom in 15 provinces.
