Volkswagen aims to double sales to 2 million by 2018

German carmaker Volkswagen AG today said it aims to double its annual sales in China by 2018.

"We are targeting to sell 2 million vehicles in China by 2018 with the earliest possible timeframe, from the current annual sales of 1 million," said Winfried Vahland, executive vice-president of Volkswagen Group and president & CEO of Volkswagen Group China when releasing the company's new strategy.

The 2 million units of sales target will be contributed by the China joint ventures Shanghai Volkswagen and FAW-Volkswagen equally and respectively, said Vahland.

To achieve the target, Volkswagen will coordinate with Shanghai Volkswagen and FAW-Volkswagen to double the number of their dealers from 1,000 to 2,000.

Besides, Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda will launch more than ten new or updated models in China between 2009 and 2010.

Volkswagon last year sold 1.02 million cars in China, hitting the 1 million mark for the first time.
