The State Council has agreed to issue licenses to mobile operators for developing third-generation (3G) high-speed networks.

At an executive meeting held yesterday, the country's Cabinet said conditions for issuing 3G licenses were mature.

The country's 3G networks will be based on three technological standards: homegrown TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access), the European WCDMA and the North American CDMA 2000.

The State Council did not say which firms would get the licenses.
