Parker Hannifin, the world's leading diversified manufacturer of motion and control technologies and systems, introduced its Mechanical Design Guideline 41 (MDG41) at China's 14th International Technology Exchange & Equipment Exhibition on Coal & Mining held between Oct 28 and 31.
The guideline released in 2006 in Australia is used for risk management of fluid injection and related injuries in the mining sector.
"MDG41 is about safety. It is about a cultural change to improve safety and MDG41 is one of many tools to help improve safety," said Gary Nauer, market manager of Mining Technologies of Parker Hannifin Corp, who was involved in the development of MDG41.
"It helps the mining customers identify the right product, to minimize the risks and it helps them keep records and safety information for those products," Gary said.
The guideline was drafted and released in response to the increased number of fluid injection and related injuries being sustained in the mining sector in Australia.
"In 2004 there was an evaluation of many injuries and some people had been killed. And a committee was put together and I was one of them. We were asked to look at how we could improve safety," Gary said.
The guideline has helped reduce death and injuries in the mining business by ensuring the integrity of components used in mining plants, according to Gary.
MDG41 is broadly adopted in Australia with about 100 percent acceptance the coal mining sector. Other sectors such as hydro mining are also quickly adopting the guideline, Gary said.
He said the guideline has also been introduced and applied in the mining industry in places including South Africa and Europe. Some manufacturers in China have also started to look at MDG 41, he added.
"We've been promoting MDG 41 in China for most probably two years," said Michael Zahra, Business Development Manager of Mining of Parker Hannifin’s Asia Pacific Group.
He said China has a very big market in coal mining. Since China's mining has been working towards reducing injuries, MDG 41 will be a useful tool for the industry.
