A group of 1000 young students from Hong Kong have ended a five-day visit to Beijing, during which they experienced a variety of local art and culture. They will travel to Fuzhou, Fujian province and Shenzhen, Guangdong province in August.

During their stay in Beijing, the students visited popular tourist spots including the Temple of Heaven and learned how to play the kongzhu, a traditional Chinese game in which people play with a bamboo ball.

On their last day in the capital on July 20, they visited the Palace Museum and, guided by its director Shan Jixiang, toured many areas that have not yet been opened to the public. They then had a night gala, performing with their contemporaries in Beijing. Hong Kong singers such as Joey Yung and pop duo Twins also performed.

The event is the start of a series of exchanges between young people in the mainland and Hong Kong that celebrate its return to the Chinese sovereignty in 1997. The activities are to deepen mutual understanding and also to enhance the cultural recognition of Chinese history of Hong Kong’s young people.
