Gazelle companies developing in China

On July 21, 2016, the Greatwall Strategy Consultants (GEI) announced a Chinese Gazelle Cloud Platform, which provides information and services to Chinese gazelle companies, at a press conference for the release of the Chinese Gazelle Development Report (2016).

A gazelle company, a term coined by US economist David Birch in the 1990s, describes a typically small publicly traded company having an annual growth rate of 20 percent or more in sales revenue from startup. Over the past decades, it has attracted wide attention in developed countries.

In the US, the Silicon Valley Index has regarded the number of gazelle companies as an important factor in measuring the regional economy. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development also attaches significance to gazelle companies and publishes reports about their development in Entrepreneurship at a Glance every year.

GEI, an enquiry agency specializing in gazelle companies, introduced the concept in China at the beginning of this decade and has led a research group for it in high-tech zones with the Torch Center since 2014. The National High-Tech Zone Gazelle Company Development Report, written by the group, aims to analyze the model’s advantages and opportunities and encourage its development.

According to the Report in 2016, high-tech zones are the best places for gazelle companies to make greater progress. About 1,900 enterprises go into the national gazelle list out of the over 70,000 high-tech companies; a proportion of 2.54%. The figure is under two percent in many other countries. The Zhongguancun Park, the first high-tech zone to show interest in the concept, drafted a Gazelle Plan early in 2003, making supportive policies and offering financial assistance

To better help gazelle companies in China, GEI began trials of its gazelle cloud platform for 10,619 enterprises in high-tech parks in the city of Wuhan, Guangzhou, Huizhou and Ningbo, in January.

The platform uses advanced cloud service technology and creates a ''platform+ service+ interaction'' model to integrate companies, service organizations, investment institutions and government offices in a healthy gazelle support structure. It provides three kinds of service: a regional platform for plan and policy release, a gazelle club offering training, activities and consultation, and a gazelle community with various services including financing and design.

Over the past few years, gazelle companies, because they create many new job opportunities and stir innovation, have become the focus in regional competition. In future, the Chinese Gazelle Cloud Platform will contribute more to gazelle development and stimulate growth in high-tech industry.
