For Dr. Qiang, being 85 years old doesn’t mean ‘oldness’ or ‘retirement.’ He insisted on the importance of continuing to work.
“I was among the first to arrive in Tangshang when the earthquake took place,” Dr. Qiang said.“It was horrifying to see those dead bodies hanging on the collapsed buildings…so our country needs quake prediction.”
In the past, people often questioned the possibility of quake prediction. Dr. Qiang replied with no words but actions.
“You will tell whether it is possible if I offer more reliable predictions,” said Dr. Qiang. “Our country supported us to study in the Soviet Union when she was at the hardest time. The money spent on each of us was able to feed a regiment…I believe we are close to the final victory in quake prediction and I will keep myself fit through exercising so that I can carry the work a step forward. I believe I can wait for that day.”
