Moving towards accurate earthquake prediction: An interview with Qiang Zuji

On October 21, 2013, President Xi Jinping delivered an important speech at the Western Returned Scholars Association’s 100 anniversary celebration in Beijing.

“Chances will be provided for returned students to display their abilities in China and access will be made for those staying abroad to make contribution to their home country,” Xi said in his speech.

These words made Qiang Zuji, a returned student from the former Soviet Union, very excited.

Dr. Qiang, born in Aril 1932, is a distinguished professor in the earthquake prediction field and has received the State Council Special Allowance for his outstanding contribution.Graduating from Beijing College of Geology (currently the China University of Geosciences) in 1953 and obtained his candidate doctor degree in geology and mineralogy from Moscow University in 1961.

The day of the 1976 Great Tangshan Earthquake was the day Qiang started working for the State Seismological Bureau. In his career, Dr. Qiang has received many awards and has published over 130 academic papers and still works today atthe age of 85.
