Warcraft, the cinematic adaptation of a video game called the World of Warcraft (WOW), has massively impacted Chinese movie theaters with a first-day take of 140 million yuan. This blockbuster puts eSport in the spotlight once again. The ongoing National Electronic Arena (NEA) 2016 has attracted more than 4,500,000 people, watching games broadcast on-line. On June 25, the Video Games Live (VGL), another gala for eSport fans, will take place in the 2008 Olympics venue in Beijing.
The NEA 2016 was a Chinese only tournament, co-hosted by the Beijing Sports Competitions Administration Center, the National Stadium and Tongfang Medium. It began on April 26 and the main LAN final will be held from the 1st to 3rd of July at the Bird Nest stadium in Beijing. Panda TV is the games’ exclusive live online broadcast platform in China.
“The eSport industry is of great potential,” said Hai Zhenwen, director of the Beijing Sports Competitions Administration Center. According to the data released by Digi-Capital, the game-software industry will generate over one hundred billion dollars in revenue in 2017, with mobile and on-line games being the pillar of the business.
Moreover, from June 25 to 26, another feast for eSport fans called VGL will be held at the Bird Nest stadium. It will be a themed concert event featuring music from popular video games performed by a live orchestra. This year, the VGL will offer segments from WOW, DOTA and StarCraft.
Also on April 26, the NEA 2016 organization committee forged a strategic partnership with Beijing INDY600, the only event INDYCAR-(INDY500) holds in Asia. By establishing cooperative relationships with 12 other companies, the NEA 2016 organization committee is about to bring an audio-visual feast to eSport fans.
