Paid nursing not contradict filial piety

Afternoon, January 24, deputies to the Beijing Municipal People’s Congress was in discussion of the report of the ordinance of Beijing home based care for the aged. Vice Executive Secretary Liu Weilin said, the city was in the process to draft a detailed regulation of parents “paying their children for nursing” .

Responding to the concern the regulation contradicts the traditional morality of practicing filial piety, Li Weilin expressed the regulation is mainly aimed at helping people in difficult financial situation, rather than common families, and is remote from encouraging parents to pay their children for taking care of themselves. “Prior to Beijing, the Nanjing government has been exploring the way. Some laid-off 40-to-50-year old will be subsidized by the local government if they take their obligation of filial piety.”

He considered Beijing will introduce detailed regulations. Some populations who are in difficulties will be possibly benefited. He said, “The government allowance is not a big amount but an encouragement for performing the obligation to support parents.”

Liu thought children should take part in an old-age care course for professional skills which is very necessary. The old age care is not handled by most regular housekeeping workers.
