Beijing and Hebei will join hands to grow 6,667 hectares of forest to protect water source in 2015.
According to Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape and Forestry, the tree-planting project will cover eight counties in Zhangjiakou and Chengde city of Hebei province. A total of 8 million trees of various species will be planted.
The project is part of the environmental protection efforts in collaborating the development of Beijing, Hebei, and Tianjin. It’s also an important move by Beijing to support Hebei province’s ecological protection and restoration.
The artificial forest community will integrate with the existing vegetation to form a green belt to resist the sandstorms from Northwest China and conserve water.
Beijing started to support Hebei to plant trees in cities and counties surrounding the capital city in 2009. By the end of 2014, the project has planted a total of 33,333 hectares of forest. It plans to plant a total of 66,667 hectares by the end of 2019.
