Beijing mayor Wang Anshun said on Tuesday that Beijing will take effective measures to tackle air pollution and endeavor to be up to World Health Organization (WHO) air quality standards by 2020.

Wang Anshun made the promise on the Beijing 2022 Bid Committee press conference held in the Olympic Museum in Lausanne after the bidding briefing to the International Olympic Committee(IOC).

Wang said clean air is not only important for the Winter Olympic Games, but also closely related to the public’s well-being.

Beijing has invested $130 billion in more than 80 measures to reduce pollution from primary sources, including fuel oil, fire coal, industrial emissions and construction dust.

A recently released air quality report by Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau proved the measures to be effective, as air pollutants declined 17 percent in May from the same period last year.

Beijing has enacted a new plan to control air pollution from 2018 to 2022, with further investment and more than 500 measures.
