The winners of the Second Young People's Screenwriting Competition, one of China's highest contests for college students, have been announced in Beijing.

A total of ten original screenplays out of 50 nominations won the awards at a ceremony held at the Beijing Normal University.

The competition is created with the aim to discover new screenplays by up-and-coming young writers.

Zhou Xing, deputy executive director of the organizing committee of the Beijing College Student Film Festival said this year there is more diversity.

"There is an increase of genres this year, like detective and fantasy, and also those with more sophisticated story-telling. And the expression of youth is also diversified, not just confined to love between boys and girls. But I think these writers should work harder, because even though you have a good grasp on your subject, on the genre, you still need to dig deep into and distill lives."

Around 517 screenplays entered the annual contest, which was launched in January this year.

The competition is part of the Beijing College Student Film Festival, organized jointly by Beijing Normal University and Beijing Municipal Bureau of Radio, Film and Television.

The annual event, held between April and May, is one of the biggest film festivals in China.
