An ice and snow season for Beijing residents kicked off at the Wukesong Sports Center in the capital on Dec 28. The event, in an effort to promote the bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics, will hold more than 50 activities including the Happy Ice and Snow Season at the Bird's Nest in the next two months. It is expected to attract more than 3 million participants.

At the opening ceremony, more than 20 figure skating enthusiasts from Beijing's Century Star Club gave a wonderful performance on the white ice. Nearly a hundred hockey players staged a fierce battle. Olympic champions Yang Ling and He Kexin attended the event and cheered on the performers.

The city's 20 ski resorts and seven ice rinks will carry out themed activities. Shichahai, Taoranting Park, Olympic Forest Park, the Summer Palace and other local places will build ice rinks to meet residents' demands.

The ice and snow season, sponsored by the Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau and Beijing Sports Federation, will last until February, 2015.
