A conference on the promotion of graphene industrialization was held in Zhongguancun's Fengtai Park, Beijing on Dec 10. Among those present were experts from the graphene industry and representatives of new materials enterprises in Fengtai Park.

Viewing the graphene industrialization as a breakthrough to stimulate the transformation and upgrading of industries, Fengtai Park has been making proactive efforts to cooperate with internationally advanced R&D institutions. The conference announced the establishment of the Zhongguancun Fengtai Park R&D Center for Advanced Graphene Engineering at Brunel University in the UK.

By giving full play to the leading role of new materials enterprises (accounting for 20 percent of the total) in technological innovation, the Park will convert achievements of R&D into production and improve the Park’s international competitiveness in the development of the graphene industry. In September this year, Fengtai Park launched an international cooperation project based on grapheme material technologies, which was the first international cooperation program with the new material of graphene as a key technology in Beijing.

Since its launch, a team from the Advanced Graphene Engineering Center at Brunel University, led by Prof. Alasdair Cairns, has been cooperating with some large enterprises of the machinery engineering industry. In this conference, the program of high-end applications of graphene in the auto industry via additive manufacturing technology (3-D printing), sponsored by Fengtai Park, SINO TYRE, Brunel University, Mahle North America and EOS Ltd from the UK, was officially launched. It aims to introduce international mature technologies and enterprises to China.

In order to further promote the concentration of graphene-related enterprises and research institutions in the Park, Fengtai Graphene Industrial Park – which covers an area of 20 hectares and a floor area of 400,000 square meters – is under construction. Efforts will be focused on building a public service platform based on the R&D, incubation, test & accreditation and the transaction of technologies and products in the graphene industry so as to attract graphene R&D institutions and enterprises engaged in the production of raw materials, applied materials and components to the Park.

Fengtai Park plans to make new technological breakthroughs in the graphene industry, conduct research into technology to make green materials, achieve large-scale production featuring high performance and low cost, and make a breakthrough in graphene-based applied technologies such as the technology of applying lightweight alloy materials and composite materials, the R&D and application of high-end structures in automotives, the R&D and application of new display materials, and the R&D of high-end motor systems (graphene batteries) in 3-5 years.

By 2020, it aims to develop into an internationally strategic graphene industrial base integrating R&D and the production of functioning materials, structural materials and composite materials and focusing on the application of graphene in such fields as machine engineering, new energy vehicles, new generation information technology, energy conservation & environmental protection, advanced rail transit equipment, new display panels, aeronautics & astronautics and oceanographic engineering.

Fengtai Park will attach great importance to the development of the graphene industry so as to promote the consolidation and optimization of the strategic new materials industry in the Park, boost the cluster-like development of the strategic new materials industry, and accelerate the transformation and upgrading of industries.
