A high-level delegation of Beijing 2022 Bid Committee officials made the first official presentation of their bid in front of representatives from National Olympic Committees on Friday.
Presenting at the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) General Assembly in Bangkok, Thailand, Beijing 2022 offered strong guarantees that the Games in the Beijing-Zhangjiakou area will not only prioritize athletes' needs, but will also be designed in a sustainable and cost-effective way.
Wang Anshun, mayor of Beijing, assured the audience that Beijing 2022 will provide all-round and high-quality services for the athletes that meet the standards established by the IOC. The Games would also be building on China's rich experience in hosting major international sporting events, including the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. The three principles behind Beijing 2022 include: running athletes-centered Games, ensuring sustainable development and hosting economical Games.
The mayor also enhanced Beijing 2022's commitment to ensure excellent conditions for representatives of the IOC, NOCs, IFs and media, so that they may work and enjoy the Beijing 2022 Games.
Another focus of the presentation was sustainability, an underlying principle behind Beijing's bid. Beijing 2022 aims to enhance the economic, social and ecological development of the area which would in turn accelerate growth of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Sport and Culture Tourism Belt under the national strategy of integrated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region.
Furthermore, it aims to create a powerful platform for long-term development of the winter sports industry in China, which would attract millions of tourists from across China, Asia and all over the world.
"Not only will the Beijing 2022 Games accelerate the economic development of the Sport and Culture Tourism Belt in the area of Beijing and Zhangjiakou connected by the Great Wall of China, it will also contribute to the development of a new winter sports market in East Asia and therefore create new opportunities and a powerful legacy for the Olympic Movement," said Wang.
He went on to describe the principle of cost-effectiveness that underpins the Beijing 2022 bid. Capitalizing on existing infrastructure (including venues that served for the Beijing 2008 Games), China's rich experience as host, and other advantages already in place, Beijing 2022 will thus be able to minimize costs in areas ranging from venue construction to Games operations. Standards for venues and operations will be carefully formulated and associated budgets controlled.
"Strong support from the government and people of China, outstanding infrastructure in place from the Beijing 2008 Games, China's extensive experience in hosting major international sporting events, a controlled budget, a pool of experienced professionals, as well as strong support from the business community - all these factors give us great confidence that we can deliver a spectacular, sustainable and safe edition of the Games in Beijing and Zhangjiakou in 2022," concluded Wang.
