China's second-largest e-commerce player by market share, JD.com, will officially launch its telecom service in May after becoming one of China's first mobile virtual network operators at the end of last year.

JD.com said in a press release on Monday that it will launch its telecom service under the name JD Mobile and build an online service center in May as it aims to provide a package solution that is tailor-made to people's demands in an era of mobile Internet.

According to the company, JD Mobile is complete and is currently being tested. The company generated its first mobile phone number and made its first successful phone call as a mobile virtual network operator on March 21.

JD Mobile will offer improved service to its users, the company said, thanks to a well-established e-commerce infrastructure. JD.com has a delivery team of more than 2,000 people, which will also serve the company's telecom business and offer door-to-door delivery service for those who want invoices for their mobile phone bills at JD Mobile.

In December, JD.com obtained one of the first licenses in China for mobile virtual network operations. Licensed companies are allowed to run basic telecom businesses by renting infrastructure from telecom operators, or even through the Internet.
