The four new supermarkets are located in the city's suburban areas, including Tongzhou, Huairou and Miyun districts. This type of supermarket can get subsidies from the municipal government.

Beijing is also setting up 1,000 smart recycling machines in those supermarkets this year, providing an easy way for people to deal with their waste.

The city's 16 energy-saving supermarkets sold a total of 127,900 energy-efficient products, with sales reaching 468 million yuan ($76.42 million) last year. These products can save energy equivalent to 7,767 tons of coal each year.
