Behind the Monument to the People's Heroes on the southern side of Tian'anmen Square is the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall where the embalmed remains of Chairman Mao Zedong (1893-1976), former Chinese leader, lays at rest. Chairman Mao's Memorial Hall was completed in August 1977. There are three main halls on the ground floor, one to the north, one to the south and the hall of reverence in between.
