URUMQI: Xu Caihou, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission , has urged armed police officers to try their best to safeguard stability in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in northwest China.

Xu met armed police officers posted in Urumqi, the regional capital, during his visit to the city on Saturday and Sunday, said a statement issued by the commission Monday.

He praised them for playing an important role in restoring social stability after the riot on July 5, the statement said, urging the armed police to well organize their actions and improve efficiency.

They should carry out their mission well under the decisions of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, act in line with the country's laws, and serve well the people's interests, he said.

The police were also called on to learn from Wan Jingang, a 31-year-old squadron leader in the Xinjiang Armed Police Contingent who died in helping people escape from rioters on July 5.
