Backgrounder: Major events in China-Bangladesh ties

BEIJING - Chinese President Xi Jinping is in Bangladesh for a state visit. Following are major events in the past four decades since the two countries established diplomatic ties in October 1975:

September 2015 -- Chinese President Xi Jinping meets with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in New York.

March 2010 -- Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visits China. The two sides decide to establish a closer comprehensive partnership of cooperation.

April 2005 -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visits Bangladesh. The two sides agree to establish a comprehensive partnership of cooperation featuring long-term friendship, equality, and mutual benefit.

January 2002 -- Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji visits Bangladesh. Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khalida Zia makes a return visit to China at the end of the year.

September 1996 -- Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visits China. The two countries sign agreements on avoidance of double taxation and prevention of tax evasion

November 1989 -- Chinese Premier Li Peng visits Bangladesh.

March 1986 -- Chinese President Li Xiannian visits Bangladesh.

July 1980 -- Bangladeshi President Zia Rahman visits China.

March 1978 -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Xiannian visits Bangladesh, the first ever by a Chinese leader to Bangladesh.

January 1977 -- Zia Rahman, chief executive of Marshal Law and chief of the Army Staff of Bangladesh, visits China.
