Death toll rises to 8,649 in Japan great quake

TOKYO - The National Police Agency said Monday that the twin disasters of the catastrophic March 11 earthquake and ensuing tsunami have left 8,649 people dead and 12,877 others unaccounted for in Japan by 9:00 am (0000 GMT Monday).
