KIEV, Ukraine - Ukraine is offering to send a team of nuclear experts who have dealt with the consequences of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster to Japan to help with the unfolding disaster at its crippled nuclear plant.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleksandr Dikusarov said Tuesday that Ukraine is prepared to send nuclear safety professionals who could provide help to their Japanese colleagues. Japan has yet to respond to the offer.
Dangerous levels of radiation have leaked from the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant along Japan's northeastern coast.
The Japanese government has ordered 140,000 people to seal themselves indoors after an explosion and a fire dramatically escalated the crisis spawned by a deadly tsunami.
