Colombian rescuers save 2 people in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE: Colombian rescuers said om Monday they had found two people alive during 10 days of rescue operation mostly in Jacmel, a coastal city in southeast Haiti.

"We helped in the rescue of a baby 22 days old close to Rue de la Comedie," said Jaime Cadena, second-in-command of the Urban Search and Rescue Unit, a rescue team made up of 36 firemen from Bogota, Colombia's capital.

"The baby was very dehydrated," he said. "If we had been one or one-and-a-half hours late, I believe the child would have died."

The spot was identified by the baby's mother, who was not home when the quake struck. The catastrophic quake destroyed her home and killed all her closest relatives, except her youngest daughter.

They also rescued a Haitian woman, Cadena added.

"We are waiting to go home," Cadena said. "But if there are calls we will respond."

With an end to all search and rescue work, the confirmed death toll from the devastating January 12 earthquake has surpassed 150,000, according to Haitian government officials on Sunday.
