AMMAN: Bodies of three Jordanian peacekeepers who died last week in the powerful earthquake that struck the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince arrived in the Jordanian capital of Amman on Tuesday.

Pallbearers carried the three flag-draped caskets in the presence of King Abdullah II of Jordan, the supreme commander of Jordan's armed forces, and Jordan's first lady Queen Rania, high-ranking officers and officials and families of the deceased peacekeepers at the Queen Alia International Airport.

The three officers, who are part of Jordan's peacekeeping mission that has been working in Haiti since 2004 when President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was ousted, died in last Tuesday 7.3-magnitude quake, which is believed to be the strongest to hit Haiti in 200 years.

A total of 23 other Jordanian officers were slightly injured in the quake.

In October last year, five Jordanian officers died in a plane crash in Haiti.

Jordan dispatched its first peacekeeping mission with the UN in December 1989, according to the Morale Guidance Department of Jordan's armed forces. Since then, the Arab kingdom sent over 61,000 Jordanian army, civil defense and public security personnel on peacekeeping missions.
